John Kushmaul has been painting in and around Little Rock for twelve years. Currently he is focusing on paintings depicting the architecture of downtown Little Rock, as well as other cities. Many of the works are based upon photographs taken by the artist; he chooses his subjects according to appealing details in the pictures. Kushmaul says, “Our city serves as a convenient subject because of the variety of architecture covering the history of modern life in Arkansas. The street, power poles, wires and satellite dishes show parts of the layer of technology that covers this history. The paintings also deal with the passage of time, and awareness of fleeting moments.”

Kushmaul is a fourth generation Arkansan, born in 1972. He studied painting at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, graduating in December of 1993.
